Myth #3: “We need a cure for autism.”
You’ve probably heard that before. Well, my daughter, Freya, and I are diagnosed as autistic and we created this mini series to debunk common myths, like this one, in order to raise awareness—especially about girls and autism.
Please note that in this video, we were new to a lot of the languaging around autism; so unfortunately, you’ll note some ableist language like functioning labels.
Part of me wanted to re-record these videos after I began to understand the importance of self-advocacy, the neurodiversity movement, and how we refer to ourselves with identity first language … however, this highlights where we were in our personal journeys at the time and illustrates just how much there is a gap between diagnosis and exposure to the ND movement and self-advocacy.
